Year 9 student Jake Earnest comes from a family of BMX riders. He’s ranked third in New Zealand in his age group for BMX and represented the school earlier this year in the national mountain bike downhill champs.
What do you most enjoy about BMX and MTB?
I enjoy how freeing it feels and also just riding with my mates.
How did you get started?
Mum and dad are avid BMX riders and mountain bikers and they introduced me to it.
How much do you train?
2-3 hours on a bike every week.
What has been your best achievement in MTB or BMX?
Fifth in my age group at the 2013 BMX World Championships, and two consecutive 2nd places in the National Secondary School Mountain Bike Downhill Championships.
What skills does it take?
You need to be very focused and be able to take risks.
What are your aspirations for mountain biking?
Travel around the world and just ride my bike.
What is your favourite subject at school?
PE and humanities.
What do you most like about ACG Parnell College?
I like how progressive and modern the school seems to be and how it pushes you to strive for more.
Jake is off to the UCI 2018 BMX World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan in June.
