“I had offers from London School of Economics and Political Science, University College London and the University of Warwick in the UK, the University of Hong Kong and the National University of Singapore, as well as the University of Sydney and the Australian National University,” says Yui.
“I decided to accept the offer from London School of Economics and Political Science. I’m really looking forward to studying economics and meeting new people from a wide range of backgrounds.”
The high-achieving Korean student started at ACG Parnell in Year 12, quickly making her mark among the school’s top scholars. She earned a string of Principal and Highest Achieving Student awards during her two years at the school, and the IB Dux award was the icing on the cake, setting her up for an incredibly bright future.
“I was thrilled to get this award. It proved that I could push myself beyond my limits – which in my case meant studying the programme in English and still achieving satisfactory results. It really boosted my confidence and made me realise that I can achieve more than I think, if I truly commit myself.”
Yui is the first to admit it hasn’t always been easy, but she says the support she received at ACG Parnell made all the difference.
“Even though it was sometimes difficult, writing essays and studying with my friends was a very memorable experience. Knowing that I was surrounded by supportive teachers and friends alleviated a lot of stress and helped me rise to the challenge.
“ACG held a number of university information sessions throughout the academic year, not only for the New Zealand and Australian universities but also American and European ones. This enabled me to broaden my horizons. The university coordinator, Mr Mills, was also extremely helpful. He gave me great insight and advice to improve the quality of my personal statement, which played a huge role when it came to getting offers from the various universities.”
Yui – who eventually hopes to work for the World Trade Organisation or the World Bank – says the IB Diploma programme has future-proofed her for success.
“I am confident that the skills I’ve learned through IB will be of tremendous help at university. Not only that, but it has helped me develop in many ways I’d never dreamed of in terms of time management, writing skills and managing my stress levels. I feel like I’ve grown so much as a person.”
