From First Splash to National Glory – A Swimming Prodigy on the Rise

For most children, swimming begins as a simple survival skill, a precautionary measure to ensure safety around water. For Donald Tian, it was no different when he first dipped his toes in the pool at age four. Yet, what started as a necessity has since transformed into a journey of competitive success. Now a Year 10 student at ACG Parnell College, Donald has emerged as one of New Zealand’s brightest young swimming talents, leaving a trail of shattered records and national titles in his wake.

In 2024, Donald has firmly established himself as one to watch in the New Zealand swimming scene. His accomplishments this year include winning six medals, three of which are national titles, at the New Zealand Secondary Schools (NZSS) Swimming Championships. Competing for ACG Parnell, Donald’s victories have brought pride not only to himself but also to the entire school community.

“I’m proud of myself to be able to contribute to not only my personal achievements but to the school’s success in swimming,” Donald said, reflecting on his outstanding performances at the NZSS Championships.

As a student at a school that places an emphasis on academic excellence, balancing the demanding training schedule of swimming with academic responsibilities is no easy task. However, Donald has developed a disciplined routine that enables him to excel in both areas.

“I wake at 4am to swim every morning except Sundays and Tuesdays. I swim in the morning to keep valuable time after school to study. I also go to sleep at 9pm to ensure I have a good amount of rest as well,  he explained.

This level of commitment is a testament to his dedication and his determination to excel is evident in every race, driven by a competitive spirit. “I love swimming because I like to win and I’m very competitive,” he said, explaining the mindset that has propelled him to one of the best in his age group.

But Donald’s success in the pool doesn’t end with his school’s triumphs. He also captured three National Age Group titles for 14-year-old boys and an additional three New Zealand Short Course titles in the same age category. These victories highlight his dominance across his age group and his versatility as a swimmer.

Among his many achievements this year, Donald is most proud of breaking two New Zealand Age Group records for 14-year-old boys in the 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle events.

“It feels amazing not only winning the events but setting records for a future swimmer to break. I am most proud of my 50m backstroke record this year—it really blew my own mind,” he said.

These record-breaking performances underscore his exceptional talent, particularly in the sprint events, which he favors. “I like sprinting, so short distance freestyle and backstroke events are my favourite,” Donald added.

Yet, for all his physical prowess, Donald recognises that success in swimming requires more than just speed and strength. The mental challenges of competitive sport are something he grapples with, especially given the pressures that come with high expectations.

“Every now and then, I end up overwhelmed by pressure, so being able to stay calm in many situations is something I am working on,” Donald admits. “It is definitely a challenge to be mentally positive and calm all the time, but I am fortunate to have great support from my coaches, family and school which relieves a bit of pressure.”

Donald's journey from learning to swim as a child to becoming a national champion is a testament to his dedication and discipline. Balancing rigorous training with academic excellence, he continues to break records and inspire those around him. With his talent and drive, Donald's future in swimming looks incredibly promising.
